Summer in Kimberley

Old Baldy cliff.

Old Baldy beaming with bright light.

Old Baldy has its own personality – sometimes dark and brooding, sometimes beaming with white light. If you wait until just the right moment at dusk, Old Baldy blushes at the audacious red of the sun at sunset.

Visitors enjoyed short hikes on the Bruce Trail and walks up the road to the General Store.

Sitting on the deck I can watch hundreds of barn swallows swooping in and out of the neighbour’s disused barn, or listen to the chickadees in the pine tree.

Kayaking On the Beaver River

Hardwood swamp on the Beaver River.

There is an access point for the Beaver River just up the road, so I put my kayak on the car and headed off to explore.  I spent a glorious day navigating the swift current of the winding Beaver River.

The river flows through a rare hardwood swamp filled with silver maple, black ash and aspen. Swamping opportunities lurked to the left and right into still waters and tangled vegetation.

One could spend hours in this magical place watching the sun cut through the huge old trees in fall magnificence.  It was dramatic in its stillness –  stunning and wondrous at every turn.

I came across a Canada goose sheltering there, perhaps preparing to migrate south for the winter. These photos barely capture a fragment of the joy and wonder I found.

September Harvest

Beaver Valley Cidery barn

The garden outside the beautifully renovated barn at the Beaver Valley Cidery.

Cool autumn nights signal the end of summer, and the trees in the Beaver Valley orchards were laden with apples.  A trip to the Beaver Valley Orchard and Cidery seemed like just the thing, to enjoy their locally made dry cider.  We sampled it with a plate of delicious local cheese in their beautifully renovated barn overlooking their gardens and fields.

The roads are now lined with wildflowers and the first red autumn leaves and purple asters provide brilliant accents to the fields of gold and green.
